Classification of petroleum-based waxes

Petroleum wax is "a solid or semi-solid hydrocarbon at ordinary temperatures present in crude oil." The following types of waxes are available from petroleum.

Paraffin wax	Separated and refined from vacuum distilled oil and solid wax at ambient temperature
Microcrystalline wax	Solid wax at ambient temperature separated and refined from vacuum distilled residual oil or heavy distilled oil
Petrolatum	Semi-solid wax at ambient temperature separated and purified from vacuum distillation residue. Highly purified one is called Vaseline, which is used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
